Frequently Asked Questions About Our Hardwood Flooring Installation, Sanding and Refinishing Services.jpg

Many homebuyers are choosing hardwood flooring for its finish, aesthetic appeal, low-maintenance, and long-term benefits. As the best hardwood floor installation and refinishing company in Royal Oak, MI, Al Havner & Sons Hardwood Flooring has been providing quality services and assisting clients with all their hardwood flooring needs.

However, while trying to dig deeper and uncover more information, clients often have a ton of questions about our products, cleaning techniques, durability, costs, etc., but find answers to these questions difficult to come by.

To ensure you have all your doubts cleared and are armed with the most accurate information available, we have answered some of the most frequently asked questions about our hardwood flooring installation, sanding, and refinishing services.

1. What type of finish do you use?

We use hybrid (green) finishes, water-based urethane, and oil-based urethane. We use the best finishes you can buy for each category.

2. Do you give free estimates?

We do not charge estimates and haven’t done so in the past thirty-five years.

3. How long will a hardwood floor last?

Our go-to answer is that there are castles with hardwood floors that are over six-hundred years old.

4. How often does a hardwood floor need to be refinished?

This depends mainly on the way you care for your floor. We have customers whose floors were refinished twenty-five years ago, and they continue to look fine. We have also seen floors that are totally ruined in a few years, mainly because of large, rambunctious dogs. Keep in mind that pet urine will destroy your floors beyond repair, if not cleaned right away.

5. How do I clean my new hardwood floor?

Hardwood flooring is as easy to clean as any floor covering. A spray bottle of our recommended cleaner and a microfiber is an excellent way to clean your new hardwood floor. Apart from cleaning your floors with a mop, a vacuum with a wand and bristles on the cleaning head also work wonders. Using a vacuum with a plastic head or a wheel is not advised.

6. What is the cost of a new hardwood price?

That is the most difficult question to answer because there is no upper limit. A basic red oak floor installed, sanded, and finished is the bottom line. As of today, that floor would start around $9.00 per sq.ft. We have done floors as high as $37.00 per sq. ft., but it all depends on your taste and checkbook.

7. Is a pre-finished hardwood floor a better option for me?

We’re not the biggest fan of pre-finished floors. Our biggest problem is the dirt catching levels between the boards. The manufacturers offer warranties that will make you believe this floor will last a lifetime, but this is not the case. These floors are very hard to refinish and cost about thirty percent more than a site finished floor.

8. Are hardwood floors a good choice for children who have allergies?

Remember the Crest toothpaste commercials, nine out of ten dentists recommend Crest. Well, ten out of ten allergist’s recommend hardwood floors, and they prefer the “Green” hybrid finish.
